Hey Debbie,
So true and thanks so much for sharing that.
I know this may sound terrible to some people (especially those who believe that some things you should just believe in no matter what) but I’m going to say it anyway.
“All of our beliefs should be on the chopping block”
That doesn’t mean we abandon what’s true or right or good.. it just means we always are open to the very real possibility that something we believe in could be dead wrong.
Always be willing to listen to others and evaluate what they say with an open mind.
And if we do that.. as you said Debbie… we open the door to real spiritual growth and self discovery.
The only way we’ll ever be able to find the truth is if we realize that we have blinders on that may be blinding us to it.
Paul
Linda made a comment about false beliefs during the interaction in Chapter 1, and Paul, you commented back about how we form beliefs from little pieces of our lives, and expand on that belief to create a giant sized belief that doesn’t serve us.
In a class that I’m taking at church, there was a line in my homework from last week that jumped right off the page and pretty much smacked me in the face, and it’s really appropriate here. It goes like this:
“Our human tendency is to figure out quickly what we believe then, from that point forward, stick to materials that affirm our early-developed belief system. We end up barely making it into our spiritual adolescence before binding our own systematic theology books in our head.”
I LOVE this. It’s so true. We bring beliefs from our past that we really don’t believe in, but it’s really all we have, so, it happens! What we think about expands, because we all LOVE affirmation of what we believe in. If we aren’t aware of it, and don’t work to change it, it takes you to a whole different future
