The Magical Intersection of Selfish And Selfless Marketing

The other day I read a blog post from a marketing guru, Seth Godin, making the point that “Selfish marketing doesn’t last.”

Actually, the post was so short, let me paste it here so you can see it.

selfish

Side note: Seth’s blog is proof positive that blog posts don’t need to be novels to add value and stay in touch with your prospects.

Can I get an amen!?

As I’ve thought about this short little idea, that selfish marketing doesn’t last, I’ve come to realize that neither does 100% selfless marketing.

The reason?

If you’re not passionate about what you’re bringing to market, whether it’s a product, service or message, you’ll never stay motivated long enough to make it a success.

And on the flip side, if your passionate as heck about something that no one care’s about, that’s a recipe for business disaster.

The solution?

Strive to meet your customer’s desires while sharing something you’re passionate about.

Be selfless and selfish at the same time.

How does this play out in home business?

If you’re targeting other home business owners (which is a great market, btw), you have to figure out what they need and know they need.

One example might be lead generation.

Another could be online recruiting techniques.  (there are more)

The key is, figure out what your target market needs… and knows they need.

That way they’ll respond when you put your marketing out into the marketplace.

Offer them that, and then in the process, strive to share with them what you’re passionate about.

Too often we start out with…

  • I’m passionate about this
  • I’m passionate about that
  • I want to share this with people because I’m good at it an I know it can change lives

And all of that is great IF those things happen to be the things your target market needs, and knows they need.

If not, you’ll have a difficult time getting people to respond .

To tell you the truth, I’m not that passionate about network marketing, online lead generation or even recruiting.

I’m way more passionate about personal development, financial freedom, making great connections & relationships… (and of course pipeline money)  🙂

If I’m targeting people in home business, I have to find a happy medium.

Offer them what I know they know they need… and mix in some of the other stuff along the way, for my own sanity and enthusiasm.
