How I went from rock bottom to building a life where time and money are no longer connected
There I knelt beside my sleeping boys, praying to God for a miracle.
Four years of trying everything I knew. Four years of sacrifice. Four years of watching other people get ahead while I fell further behind.
And there I was— tears streaming down my face, gut-punched by the fear that I’d failed them as a father.
They say your breaking point can be your turning point. What happened next makes me believe that’s true.
Where It Started
The best I could do after college was a job in a call center cubicle making $11 an hour. All my wife and I could afford was a 1984 single-wide mobile home.
Every day, I got up, went to work, and gave it everything I had. I was the guy who showed up early, worked through lunch, and stayed late.
None of it seemed to matter.
I watched people who worked less than I did get promoted—because they were better at playing politics. I hated that that’s how the game worked, and I refused to sink to that level for money.
One time, I skipped my wedding anniversary to sacrifice for the company. The thanks I got? My boss was disappointed I didn’t say “yes” fast enough—because I wanted to check with my wife first.
A fire started burning inside me that day.
I knew there was no way I was going to spend my life sacrificing my family for money, or for a cold-hearted company that didn’t appreciate me.
Looking For Another Way
I started looking for something different—a way to build income that wasn’t tied to trading hours for dollars. A way to create something that could grow beyond my own effort.
I found network marketing first. Then affiliate marketing. I tried everything—contact lists, hotel meetings, flyers on cars in the freezing cold, even going door-to-door with my best friend.
The result? Embarrassing failure after embarrassing failure.
It was humiliating to work so hard for so little result while people laughed and looked down on me.
One time, a close relative said, “I can’t believe your wife puts up with this.”
“Puts up with what?” I asked.
“Puts up with you keeping your family cramped in this tiny little shack,” she said with a disapproving glance toward our trailer.
It felt like a dagger in my heart—because I knew she’d said out loud what others were thinking.
Deep inside, I secretly wondered if they were right.
Then, Things Got Worse
After four grueling years, things took a turn for the worse.
I was working in my little office when I heard my wife’s car pull into the driveway. She walked in, and I could see she’d been crying.
“What’s wrong?” I asked.
It hit me like a ton of bricks: our insurance had just expired.
“The doctor said Kyson has a birth defect where the bones in his head are fused together. He needs a $50,000 surgery.”
I wrapped her in my arms and told her everything was going to be okay. But the truth is, I didn’t know. I was scared.
Jobless. Savings dwindling. Business failing. Family to support. And now an expensive surgery for my newborn son.
This is how I found myself on my knees, praying for a miracle.
What Changed Everything
Not long after that prayer, I discovered something that changed the trajectory of my life.
I learned that there was a completely different way to build a business—one where people came to me instead of me chasing them. One where I could provide value first and build trust before ever asking for anything.
And it made so much sense once I understood it.
Instead of begging friends and family, I could create content that helped people.
Instead of cold calling strangers, I could build systems that worked while I slept.
Instead of trading time for money, I could buy assets that generated income whether I worked that day or not.
I immediately started to apply what I was learning.
The results weren’t instant. But for the first time, I had a plan that made sense—one that didn’t require me to do things that felt uncomfortable or embarrassing.
The cloud over my business lifted and I had hope.
The Breakthrough
The first big confirmation came in the form of a voicemail.
I clicked play and heard: “Hi Paul, this is Laureen from New Jersey. I found you on the Internet, and I’m ready to join. I just need your information.”
A stranger—someone I’d never met—had found me online and wanted to do business with me?
That was just the beginning.
As I continued to learn and apply these principles, I eventually reached a point where every single day, people were reaching out to me—asking to work with me, asking for guidance, asking how I could help them.
All the worry about where to find my next customer or team member—gone. Replaced by confidence in my future.
I went on to reach the top level in my company and become the #1 all-time earner.
The Gift Of Freedom
We were finally in a position to save for the future, pay off debt, invest, buy a home in the country, and move out of that trailer.
We got to travel—Maui, Rome, Greece. The memories I have of taking my wife to those places fill my heart with joy.
My wife’s aunt saw a picture of me on stage with a big check and asked my in-laws, “Was that real?”
I’d be lying if I said that wasn’t satisfying—finally having others see that what I’d been building actually worked.
But here’s what I discovered: the material stuff is nice, and I’m grateful for it all.
But it’s not what feeds the soul.
The Deeper Lesson
The thing I’m most grateful for is freedom.
I’ve been able to be at all my kids’ games. I’ve been there for my family when they needed me most. I never had to ask permission from a boss to do things that mattered to my loved ones.
I was able to retire in my early 40s—not because I wanted to stop working, but because I’d built income streams that didn’t require my daily presence to keep flowing.
Time and money finally became disconnected.
I can finally greet each day as a blank slate and do what I want to do, instead of doing what I have to do, for money.
What a gift.
And I discovered something surprising along the way:
A big part of happiness comes from knowing that what you’re doing each day is helping others in some meaningful way.
That’s why I do what I do now.
What I Do Today
Today, I help people build the same kind of freedom I found.

I appreciate you listening to me last week. Gosh I really have no one else to talk with about this that will understand. My biggest obstacle is myself. I understand this but how to get over it is so challenging. Everyday I have voices that play in my head with why this doesn’t make sense.
Ok here goes. I’m scared to death that money will change me like it did before http://renandhiedi.com/about-ren/. Prior to March 2008 I was very successful financially but my spiritual and personal life was horrible. I had such tunnel vision and nearly lost my family. After 2008 I’ve become closer to my family and much more spiritual but financially it’s been a challenge.
To solve this in November 2008 I spent $17k on a program called Millionaire Mind. I did some pretty intense stuff! I went to all kinds of seminars and got to the root of my issues or so I thought. It was great but then I noticed this trend. Some of my closest friends left the church and all they held dear. I don’t know if it was money, success or what ever.
I even had a former partner of mine tell me that he’s never made as much money as he has now but lost everything that was important in his life his family and he was doing everything he could do to get them back.
So my biggest challenge is my fear of going back to the way it used to be and loosing my family. I had close many close friends who read The Science of Getting Rich over and over and became very very successful. They read philosophy books like Conversations with God and Atlas Shrugged. Their scriptures took a back seat and they eventually left the church. I’ve read all these books and watched the secret about 100 times. I understand that David Wood is a former member of the church and actually went on a mission.
SO I JUST DON’T GET IT?
So my question to you is how have you been able to become successful in this other area yet still keep your Testimony? I know that if I can get over the obstacle of myself that everything else will just fall into place but I’m scared to death.
Please please help! Your the only person that I’m aware of that has been able to balance both.

I’m so sorry I never saw this comment until now.
What you speak of is very common. The idea that more financial success will bring loss to other important areas of your life. This can and certainly does happen so It’s a valid concern.
For me – I’ve always loved the line from T Harv Eker in ‘Secrets of The Millionaire Mind’ where he says – “Poor people think in terms of either/or – wealthy people think in terms of ‘and.’ ”
I love the idea that we can have both. We can be successful financially AND also be successful spiritually.
In fact, I think spiritual success can feed into earthly success.
The parable of the talents is a great example.
That story seems to indicate that we are supposed to take what we’ve been given and multiply it and make the most of it.
Maybe the key is integration versus sacrificing one for the other.
In my current business, we set it up so that a portion of all we earn goes to help feeding kids through an organization called Feed My Starving Children.
This means that the more we succeed financially, the more we succeed spiritually because we’ve integrated the 2.
We also are striving to build our business in such a way – that everyone wins and no one gets hurt.
This is a spiritual principle I believe.
I don’t have all the answers – but It’s never made sense to be that God would want the best for us and want us to struggle financially at the same time.
I think another key for me has been how I defined financial success. For me it’s never been about mansions or fancy cars. It’s been about freedom and financial stability.
I think this would be in alignment with what my idea of God’s will for my life might be.
It also sets the bar to such a place that I never feel like I have to sacrifice my family or other important spiritual parts of my life in the pursuit of achievement.
I love what Napoleon Hill said – “If money is all you have in your paycheck at the end of the week, you have been grossly underpaid.”
I coined a term that was inspired from that quote – ‘Soulpay’.
As I’m building my business and going about my life – I’m looking for the soul pay to be included within my weekly paycheck.
Again the world ‘Integration’ comes to mind.
How can you build a business and a life where you and others win financially AND spiritually?
That’s the question we want to answer, and I believe there definitely are answers when we ask the questions in the right way.
Anyway, hope some of this has been helpful.

Used to work in the home office of a large Provo mlm for many years but never took the mlm plunge till just last December after a layoff…now making more than my last corporate job and more time for the family.
