What can be learned from 2 pages of a book?
A lot.
In 1977 Art Williams (a former high school football coach) started a little company with a group of rag tag ‘normal‘ people who went on to build a life insurance company that dwarfed financial superpowers that had been in business over 100 years.
As a home business entrepreneur, what can you profitibly learn from his story?
Here are 3 keys from the first 2 pages, the introduction of Pushing Up People, by Art Williams
1. ‘You can build something out of nothing, as long as that ‘nothing’ you start with is a powerful belief.
Art Williams wrote “We struck out to build a company based on a belief.
At the time that we made our decision we had “nothing” to get started with: no office, no compensation plan worked out, no materials to take to clients to show them the philosophy we believed in.
We didn’t even have a name for our company!
All we had was a group of people who felt so strongly about what they were selling and the type of company they wanted to work for, that the risk didn’t matter.”
2. Experts are over rated and the REAL power is in the people.
“We also had people telling us that what we were doing wouldn’t work. According to the “experts,” we weren’t building our company with the “right kind” of people.
You see, we didn’t try to recruit people who had already sold insurance… or who had fancy degrees from an important university.
We recruited people like ourselves, from all walks of life.
They were people like ourselves, who had dreamed all their lives from accomplishing something special, but didn’t necessarily have the social or financial means in hand to do so.”
Have you ever had someone, an expert maybe, tell you it wouldn’t work?
When we were building the products for our company we had an attorney (‘expert‘) tell us that we needed to immediately drop the commission rate because there was no way we’d be able to sustain paying out 80% commissions on product sales.
We ignored that advice and now, as of this post, have paid out just shy of 6 million dollars in commissions.
Bottom line: No one knows you like you, no one knows your business like you can know your business and NO ONE knows the true power of your dreams, but you. I don’t care what kind of fancy degree or public applause they may have recieved in the past.
Also, when it comes to recruiting, don’t judge but do look for the dreamers.
You’ll be able to recognize them for how their soul is shining and NOT by the car they drive or the clothes they wear.
3. The Golden Rule is Old Advice That Will NEVER Be ‘Outdated’
Art Williams said “We built A.L. Williams based on the principle of treating people right, of making all of our decisions based on what as good for our people and our clients first.
…I have always believe that you can run a company to obtain selfish goals by using intimidating management techniques only for a certain period of time.
Sooner or later, the people who work for you will figure you out.
They’ll figure you out, and either try to cheat you back or quit. In either case, you reach a point of zero growth or possibly bankruptcy.
You wake up one day and find you’ve built yourself a business where maybe you’re a little ashamed of the way you do things.
…When we started our company, we vowed it would never come to that. We would lay the whole company on the line to follow our management beliefs. We were going to treat people the way they ought to be treated.
…To me, no amount of money is worth the feeling I have about this company every night before I cut off the light to go to sleep.”
In just 7 short years, this philosophy grew A.L. Williams to,
- over 100,000 people
- over 61 billion in sales
- over 3 billion in monthly revenue
- helped 75 people become millionaires
All by the 1985 publishing time of this book, ‘Pushing Up People by Art Williams.‘
My business partner and I made a similar decision when we started our company.
We said, if ever there is a decision that requires a choice between “Profits to the company” and “Doing what’s right for the people” we commit to choosing the people, every single time.
And while we haven’t matched the staggering results of A.L. Williams (yet), we have built a company and a community that we’re proud of.
One that’s helped many, many people start a business from home and get on the path of doing more and becoming more so they can have more.
One that’s helped to provide over 328,000 days of meals to kids in need via our community donations.
One where dreams have come true, relationships have been built, and there is a sense that together, we ARE doing something special for ourselves and the world.
When I look back over the last few years, I believe most, if not all of our success has grown from the seeds planted in this blog post, and now into your mind and heart, dear reader.
- A powerful belief can carry you far and high, like you’re soaring with wings of an Eagle.
- Experts are overrated and the real power is in the people. Trust your intuition, your own life experiences and never let anyone do your thinking for you, I don’t care how nice the book on the cover.
- The Golden Rule is your guide to gold, financial and otherwise.
Thanks for reading and I hope you’ve enjoyed this little post, all from the introduction of this great little book, Pushing up People, by Art Williams.

I love the concept that if you really believe strongly, it doesn’t matter what people say about how well it will work. I’m thinking this is especially true about micro niches that may not have many people in them. But if you target a specific group of people that you will identify with deeply, you’ll get a bigger percentage of the total group, and maybe succeed just fine.
Yes, I agree. Thanks for the comment Debbie and hope all is well!
When your vision becomes your reality, you are creating on command. Art turned to his higher power, attracting people who believed as he believed Creating results through service and value. Creating the outcome he sought to create. Great lesson Paul on belief , staying focused, and tuning out the naysayers.
Love the way you put that David.
1. Tune into higher power
2. Attract those who believe as you believe
3. Create on command.
What great steps.
Thanks so much David!
