How To Select A Domain Name For Your Blog

If you’re not quite sure why starting a blog would be a good thing to do, you might want to read this post.

Now, once you’ve made the decision to start one, the first question you’ll have is “What should my web address, or domain name be?”

In my mind, there are 2 different approaches you can take with this.

Approach 1 – The Niche Specific Approach

If you know with certainty which niche you want to create content around…

  • Health
  • Personal Development
  • Online marketing
  • Income from home
  • Real estate
  • Network marketing
  • Etc…

And you are so passionate about this topic that you can see yourself staying in this niche for a long period of time,

…you can select benefit rich domain name that creates what we like to call a Message to Market Match with the specific audience you’re going to target.

Your message (the words contained in your domain name) should speak to the audience or niche you want to help.

This is about knowing what your market wants and then putting words in your domain name that speak the solution to their problem.

In the past, I’ve targeted the network marketing community and here are 2 benefit rich domain names that speak to that audience.

  1. www.MLMInternetExplosion.com
  2. www.OnlineRecruitingSecrets.com

See how that works?

What if you’re not quite sure which niche you want to target – and or – you are having a hard time putting yourself in a box that you might have to stay in for many years to come.

This is where option 2 comes into play.

Personality Driven Approach

This is where you decided to develop your own voice and take the license to share whatever valuable information you might want to share with your audience.

The best example I can think of on this is Oprah Winfrey.

She became a trusted voice for millions and millions of people on a variety of topics and people follow her for who she is, and the value she provides on a wide range of ideas or ‘niches’.

This approach can actually work really well even if you’re in a home business and are going to start out targeting other home business owners for 2 reasons.

  1. In home business, people are attracted to people – much more so than companies or brands and so building your blog around you, is a good way to attract people to you.
  2. With blog plugins like “Pretty Link” you can take your personalized domain and create an unlimited number of niche specific domains.

Here’s an example.

Let’s say you buy the domain name that has your name in it. (assuming your name isn’t super long and/or hard to spell)

If your name is hard to spell – you could do a variation like my friend Joseph Bradley did.

His name isn’t hard to spell, it just wasn’t available so he bought the name www.CoachJBrad.com instead.

Perfect.

So after you have your blog installed, you can add this Pretty Link plugin and create whatever addon, niche specific domains you want to.

Here are 2 examples I use.

  1. www.PaulHutchings.net/income
  2. www.PaulHutchings.net/superfood

Pretty cool right?

And the nice thing about doing your blog this way, is that you can change and evolve over time with your marketing and not have to feel stuck in a certain box.

I also like the idea that I can sometimes talk about things on my blog that might  be not 100% niche specific, because I’m building my voice – not just my authority in a certain niche.

So, if you want to build a blog  – Step one is to decide on your domain name strategy, pick a domain and head on over to Godaddy.com and buy it.

Here in the next post or so, we’ll cover a some steps on getting it set up.

Hope these tips on how to select a domain name for your blog have helped!

  1. Amazing insight on choosing a domain. You’re the first leader in the industry that breaks this down in such a great way. It makes so much sense and now I will have to teach others to be very specific and intentional when choosing a domain. #Seeds
