My name is Paul Hutchings and I was in your exact shoes just a few short years ago.
I’d been struggling in my network marketing business for 5 years straight.
I’d made countless lists and done hotel presentations & one on one appointments til I was blue in the face.
I’d called all my friends and family and list after list of their friends and family.
After 5 years and 14 failed attempts in different network marketing companies, I found myself jobless, struggling and living in a single wide trailer-house with a wife and 3 kids to support.
In this post, I want to share with you the 5 big ideas that changed everything for me and took me from failure to top earner status in network marketing.
- I’ve now personally sponsored over 1,293 team members.
- I’ve been a top earner and leadership council member in my last 2 network marketing companies
- I’ve trained thousands of home business entrepreneurs and helped to develop some of the world’s highest paid earners in the Home Business Profession.
- I’ve done all of this 100% from home, using the internet without hotel presentations, lunch appointments, buying leads or hounding my friends and family.

Steven Covey says in his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, that a principle is a principle if it will work just as well for 1 person as it will for another.
I believe this to be true.
I believe that if one person achieves a certain result, it’s because they followed a certain law or principle, and that if another person can follow the same law or principle, they too can achieve a similar (or maybe even better) result.
And that leads us to the 5 Big Ideas (or principles) that took me from struggling to success in network marketing.
Principle #1: Tapping Into Natural Demand
One of my early marketing mentors taught me that it’s pretty difficult to sell steaks to vegetarians.
Vegetarians don’t eat meat, so why try to sell them something you already know they don’t want.
And yet, for 5 years straight, that’s exactly what I’d been trying to do with my network marketing business.
When I learned that every day, millions of people were waking up with a desire to buy the exact thing I was selling, and that through the power of the internet, I could connect with them and show them my products & business,
… everything changed.
Principle #2: Building A Stream Of Pipeline Leads
One of my all time favorite stories is found in the book Rich Dad Poor Dad.
It’s about a village in the mountains that runs out of water.
2 different solutions arise.
1 is to pack buckets from a nearby lake.
The other is to build a pipeline.
Anyone who hears the story quickly realizes the power of building a pipeline.
Once the pipeline is built, the water pumps 24/7 with no manual labor.
This is one of the reasons I got into Network Marketing in the first place, to build Pipeline Money.
With the internet, I learned that you could also build a pipeline of leads.
A pipeline that pumps prospects right into your email inbox every single day – 24/7 – generated by an army of sales robots you setup and scatter around the internet.
Principle #3: The Law Of Averages And The Internet
One of the most inspiring ideas for me, in network marketing, is the idea that if you work the numbers, the numbers will work for you.
If you just show your products and business to enough people, you will have success.
I believe in the law of averages and it’s something that’s always inspired me to keep moving forward, even through the tough times.
Here’s what’s cool about using the internet and technology to sponsor and recruit.
Instead of YOU Facing the rejecting of the 90% who say no, your video robot, capture page or sales page can take that rejection for you.
With the internet, it’s truly possible to utilize technology to sort and sift through thousands and thousands of unqualified prospects – so you don’t have to.
This means showing your products and business to more people with less rejection. WOOO HOOO! 🙂
Principle #4: Attracting Customers And Business Partners
Jim Rohn’s mentor, Earl Shoaf, gave him a piece of advice that has always stuck with me.
He said, “Success is not something you pursue. Success is something you attract by the person you’ve become.”
In my early days of network marketing, it felt like I was chasing business. It was hard and I had to run after it every day with my hands outstretched.
Over the years, that’s changed.
It now truly feels like success is something I attract.
I believe this can happen for anyone who applies the principles of attraction.
- Become a person of value
- Target a hungry market
- Craft a magnetic message
When you learn to combine all 3 of these factors into your network marketing business, everything can become easier.
In fact, just a couple weeks ago I was talking to lady on the phone when she asked me “Paul, do you have anything else I can join you in?”
Isn’t that a different way to build your business. 🙂
Principle #5: Getting Paid From The People Who Tell You ‘no’
When you make the shift from being a ‘rep’ or a ‘salesperson’ to becoming a solutions provider, your prospects will begin to look to you for advice and council on how to build their business.
This means that if you have a product or service that can help them in their business, they will buy it because they trust you.
This can happen before they join you in your network marketing business, after they join you or even if they tell you no.
This makes it so while you are generating leads to sponsor and recruit into your business, you can be earning commissions even from the leads who aren’t yet ready to join your network marketing business.
Instead of paying for leads, your leads pay you. What!? 😉
In fact, my very first $3,000 per month income from home was composed of $1,500 from my network marketing company and another $1,500 from a solution I was offering to my prospects.
Had I not been getting paid from the people who were telling me no, my income would have been cut in half and it would have taken me twice the time to reach a full time income from home.
Bonus Principle: Nothing works without work.

The truth is, business can be easier when you follow certain principles but it will still require work.
Anyone telling you that you can follow a push button path to easy riches, is most likely, selling easy buttons. 🙂
