A Customer Quit Over AI. Here's the Problem With Opting Out.
A customer reached out to me recently to tell me he was quitting the business.
And the reason caught me off guard.
Not money. Not time. Not results.
It was AI.
He'd been reading some of the doomer headlines lately, stories about AI hacking into systems and such. And he told me his principles wouldn't let him keep taking part.
His reason might surprise you. I think it's worth digging into, because I have a feeling he's not the only one wrestling with it.
First, huge respect to him
So many people just quit and never say a word. They quietly disappear, and you're left wondering what happened.
He didn't do that. He took the time to reach out and tell me directly. That's a stand-up guy, and huge kudos to him for it.
I can also respect where he's coming from. Anyone who wants to stand on their principles, and not be tied to something they don't believe in, has my respect.
Here's the problem though
Bought something on Amazon lately? That's AI.
Searched Google? AI.
Sent an email? You're feeding AI.
Watched Netflix? AI picked those "what to watch next" suggestions for you.
Heck, my wife and I just bought a new bed. Guess what? It's AI powered. Ha ha.
Choosing not to use AI on principle is admirable. I just don't know if it's possible anymore.
AI is working its way into every part of everything we do, whether we know it or not. Short of moving to a secluded cabin in the woods, far away from society, I don't see how anyone fully opts out.
So walking away from one business because it uses AI doesn't really take AI out of your life. It just takes it out of the one place where you could have put it to work for you.
Love it or hate it, there's no opting out
Whether you think AI is good or bad, whether you love it or hate it, there's no escaping it.
Fighting it is one strategy.
Putting it to work for good is a far more useful one. (And a far more profitable one, in my humble opinion.)
Used well, it can massively leverage your time. It can give you a huge boost of skills that would otherwise take years to learn.
I don't say that because I read it somewhere. I say it because I've watched it happen in our own business.
What two non-programmers built with AI in 18 months
My business partner Mike and I aren't programmers. Not even close.
But after about 18 months of working with AI every single day, here's what the two of us have built.
- We rebuilt our entire software platform with AI. That's a website and funnel builder, email marketing, an online store, bookings, membership sites, blogs and traffic tools. (I told the story behind that rebuild in A $100K Miss, 18 Months of Rebuilding, and the Comment That Made It All Worth It.)
- Since March alone, AI has made more than 8,500 changes to our code across more than 2,300 updates. A team of developers would normally need years to do that.
- Sage, our AI support agent, now handles about 87% of member support tickets on its own. It answers questions, fixes account problems and pulls answers from our own help library. Only the hard cases come to us.
- It finds and fixes our bugs. When a member reports a problem, the fix is often built, tested and waiting for our approval the same day.
- It makes our training videos and records the voiceovers.
- It's built into what our members use. Our members have their own AI assistant that builds their pages, writes their emails, makes lead magnet PDFs and turns posts into social media content.
The biggest result isn't on that list
It's this.
Two guys now run a software company that would normally need a whole team.
That's time you get back. Skills that would have taken years to learn, available right now.
AI isn't the hero.
It isn't the villain.
It's a tool.
What matters is whose hands it's in, and what they choose to build with it.
If you're on the fence about AI
If you've read this far, I'd bet you're the kind of person who'd build something good with it.
You don't have to become a programmer. Mike and I sure didn't. You just have to decide you'd rather put it to work than pretend it isn't there.
If you're curious what that looks like inside a home business, you can check out the system we built here. It's the system our members use, with AI built in to handle as much of the work as it can. No pressure at all. Come see for yourself.

P.S. To the friend who reached out: thank you for being straight with me. I respect it.
P.P.S. So where do you land? Fight it, or put it to work?
