There I knelt, with tears streaming down my face, looking over the 2 angelic, sleeping faces of my kids, praying to God for help that I could somehow, some way break through to freedom in my home based business.

There were many times along my journey to freedom that I wondered if it was ever going to really happen for me. I mean after 14 failed attempts in different companies, I gotta admit, even I was starting to question my sanity and wonder if this was EVER going to work.

People see me staying home full time with my wife & kids, living debt-free, traveling, speaking on stages throughout the world,

…and living a life of freedom now, and mistakenly conclude that I’ve always been successful, or that it somehow came easy to me. Nothing could be further from the truth.

I remember all too well, slaving away – day by day in that cubicle, dreaming of how I could quit that dang job for good. I remember having to leave my wife & kids every morning, wishing from the bottom of my heart that I could somehow find a way to be a stay at home dad so I could be there for my family. I remember getting rejected, being looked down upon and even criticized by my friends and family for the decision I’d made to go for my dreams.

In this post, I want to share with you my TRUE story of failure to success in home business, along with some of the biggest breakthroughs I had along the way, in hopes that my story and lessons can be a blessing to you, and possibly help you win your freedom faster.

My home business journey starts back in 2005, when I was working in a call center making $11.09 an hour. I met my sweetheart Corene, at church one Sunday and somehow convinced her to go on a date with me. Long story short – we got married.

Neither one of us was making much money so we got a loan for $13,500 to buy a single wide trailer house that we parked on my grandpa’s farm and that’s where we started our family.

We were deeply in love and very happy for the most part, but we knew we wanted to be able to have kids and eventually own a home of our own to raise our family in. Corene wanted to be a stay at home mom and I desperately wanted to support her in that. Another dream of ours was to be debt free and so we quickly realized that there was no way we were going to be able to do the things we wanted to do, on an $11.09 hourly wage.

And that’s when I started my first home based business. I still remember, sitting in that run down warehouse, with my pregnant wife sitting next to me on a folding metal chair – staring at the whiteboard at the front of the room. I naively thought to myself, this is going to be so easy. I mean how hard could it be. Find a few people who want to earn some extra income. I seriously thought I was gonna be making a yearly salary – monthly in a very short amount of time. Boy was I in for a rude awakening.

My entire first year, I made zero dollars. I called all my friends and family. I went door to door. I traveled to meetings. I mailed letters. I called referrals. I put flyers on parked cars in the middle of freezing Idaho winters. And after ALL that, I was still failing miserably.

Maybe it was the company’s fault – I said to myself. And that led me to another 4 years of failure, jumping around from company to company to company – failing at them all. And after 5 years of failure – I started to wonder if maybe i was failing because I still had that stupid job that was taking up most of my time. And so, with my wife’s blessing, and a little bit of savings, I quit my job.

Imagine my surprise as I watched my income actually go down, after quitting my job and deciding to work the business full time. I couldn’t believe it. What was my problem? Was this EVER going to work for me I wondered?

It was right around that time when my wife came home from a doctor’s appointment one day, and told me that Kyson, our 2 week old son, had been diagnosed with a head condition called craniosynostosis. This meant the bones in his head were prematurely fused together and he needed a $50,000 surgery down at primary children’s hospital.

I think this was definitely one of the lowest points of my life. I remember putting my oldest 2 boys to bed one night – After reading their bedtime stories and watching them drift off to sleep, and I just started to cry.

I felt like I was failing as a husband, father and provider for my family. I remember kneeling down beside my kids bed and offering a prayer to God for help out of my situation. And THAT, is when things really started to turn around. I learned a few things (that I’m going to share with you in this post) that caused a total life shift. As I think about it now, it still seems like such a miracle to me.

I went on that year, to build my first $3,000 per month passive income. Over the next few years, that $3,000 per month passive income grew and grew and grew to the point where now, my business is generating so much cash flow that we’ve been able to do things that to me, can only be described as living the life of my dreams. We’ve been able to move out of the trailer, buy our dream home in the country on 7 acres, and pay off the mortgage so we don’t have to pay the bank any monthly payments. I can’t even begin to tell you how good it feels to be debt free.

In addition to being out of debt – I fired my boss forever and i don’t have to deal with alarm clocks, traffic or people putting me down at work every day. I traded all that for having breakfast with my kids each morning and being able to drive them to school and have super meaningful conversations along the way. I get to travel the world, meet AMAZING people, see things that expand my mind and all along – share my message and story of freedom with others. Truly, it’s a dream come true.

I want to share with you a few of the biggest tips that have helped me to get to this life of freedom.

Tip 1 – Learn How To Market Yourself and Your Business Effectively

When i first got started, my sponsor told me to make a list of my friends and family and call them to show them the business. I learned all sorts of clever ways to invite them to look at what I was doing. Truthfully, that strategy did work. Even though there was tons of rejection along with a fair dose of ridicule, I DID sponsor some people. Aside from the rejection and the uncomfortableness of the whole thing, there was another BIG problem though. Eventually I ran out of people to talk to. I remember one day, sitting in my office, looking at STACKS of contact lists, and saying to myself, “Do I REALLY want to call these people AGAIN and ask for another referral or invite them to look at my business one just more time?” I didn’t. It made my stomach turn to even think about it. And that’s when I started to look for another way.

What I discovered blew me away. I learned that through marketing and technology, I could actually build a never ending pipeline of prospects who were coming to me on a daily basis and inquiring about my business. That was a GAME changer for me. I still remember the first time I saw this actually starting to work. I remember getting a voicemail that said, “Hi, Paul, I found your video online and I’m ready to join – I just need your distributor ID.” I literally about fell out of my chair. Could it really be this easy to build a home based business? Learning to market myself and my business versus continuing to prospect and chase, has been a HUGE breakthrough for me and know I wouldn’t be where I am today had I not made a decision to do things differently.

Tip 2 – Not All Freedom Vehicles Are Created Equal
====================================
When I finally broke through to my first six figure income, I learned a very important lesson that I want to pass along to you. Not all vehicles are created equal. Here’s what I mean. The size of team I had when I built my first six figure income was actually a lot SMALLER than the team I had when I was making only $1,000 a month. That doesn’t make sense does it? I should have been making less with a smaller team right?

I discovered something I like to call “The Law of The Measuring Cup” and understanding this can literally SUPERCHARGE your journey to freedom. Let’s say you want to bake a cake, we’ll call it your freedom cake. The recipe calls for 2 cups of flour. You have a choice of using a teaspoon, or a big 1 cup measuring cup – to get the flour from the flour container into the mixing bowl. Which are you going to use, the teaspoon or the 1 cup measuring cup? The measuring cup right? Because you can get more done faster.

Well, this same rule applies to building your freedom from home. What I didn’t realize, was that many of vehicles I’d been driving, had been paying me in teaspoon sized commissions. This made it so I had to do a LOT more work, and keep much bigger teams active to get anywhere near the result I was looking for.

It’s sort of like, your freedom and dream life is a destination on a map and you need a vehicle to get you from where you’re at now, to where you want to be. The important thing to realize is that not all vehicles are created equal. Some vehicles are broken down, rusted, with the transmissions stuck in first gear – and others are more like a shiny new red sports car hot off the showroom floor. If you want to achieve your goals fast, I recommend driving the sportscar. 😉

Tip 3 – Find A Mentor That You Can Latch On To
====================================
After that tear filled prayer I offered back in 2009, looking over my kids sleeping faces, I found myself on the internet looking for answers. I remember finding this guy – who had created a life of absolute freedom – and I could tell that he wanted to help other people get there too. I made a decision that I was going to latch onto this mentor and do whatever I had to do to be able to learn what he knew.

I reached out to him – and what he shared with me changed everything. I don’t believe I’d be living the life I am now – had I not decided to follow him and learn what he was willing to teach. Finding the right mentor can greatly shorten the journey to success. This is not because he or she will DO things for you – or take away any of your personal responsibility …rather – it’s because they can teach you things so that you won’t have to make the same mistakes they’ve already made. This is priceless.

There’s a sea of opinions, ideas, and confusion out in the marketplace today and sometimes you have learn how to tune it all out – and focus – on only the voices that matter. The ones that can lead you to freedom. This is really important.

Tip 4 – Never Give Up!
====================================
I know this one may seem obvious because they say it in all the books and audios, but TRULY, my friend, I want to encourage you to NEVER give up on your dreams. As you read in my story, it took me YEARS and 14+ failed attempts in different companies to FINALLY win my freedom from home. What if I’d have gotten frustrated too soon and quit? What a tragedy that would have been. Not only would I have missed out on seeing my dreams come true, but many of my team members might not be living their dreams today either. NO matter what challenges you’ve faced or are facing right now, I want to encourage you to KEEP going because I’m telling you, Freedom is worth it.
