Compound Effect Chapter 5 (Influences)

Chapter 5 of The Compound effect is all about the things that influence us.

Throughout the course of a day there are many, many subtle things that either inspire us or discourage us.

Lift us up or beat us down.

Ideally – we want to maximize the positive influences that breath life into our souls and help us sail forward into our better futures, and minimize the opposite.

Darren Hardy says that all of these ‘influences’ fall into 3 main categories.

  1. Information
  2. People
  3. Environment

Information…

‘Hey, a little news now & then couldn’t hurt the guys says to  himself.’

So each night before bed he glances at the headlines of which 99% are depicting the worst of what humanity has to offer.

All night his unconscious mind is chewing on those ideas and slowly but surely, over time he develops a belief that the sky is falling.

What do you think that does to his hope, motivation and willpower to succeed?

People

‘Hey – sitting around at lunch complaining with your co-workers or team members about how low the pay is, how bad the boss is, or how silly the management… No big deal, right?”

Seeds of thought – being planted – day by day in such a small subtle way – add up to trees with fruit sprouting up, in and throughout a life.

Are we hanging with the right planters?

Roses, oaks & seeds that sing or noxious weeds with thorns that sting?

Environment

Is your mind clear and free to think and soar or is it bogged down like an office bombarded with clutter?

Is there psychic baggage weighing you down?

Unfulfilled commitments & un-kept promises…?

Clear out the space – physically and metaphorically to create an environment you can thrive in.

So there you have it.

Information, people & environment.

Bottom line – We want strive to plant only the best seeds in the soil of our souls, all the time – so we can grow into those mighty oaks we are destined to become.

  1. Great stuff Paul! So true about the small things adding up!
It has always amazed me how easy it is to dismiss the small things that ultimately build up to harm us, while at the same time, it is equally as difficult to allow the small things that ultimately build up to reward our lives immensely. That’s where discipline comes in. Right?

    Thanks for sharing brotha man

    • Yes sir Mr. Joseph. Discipline sure seems to be the magic word for change and success. Excited about all these new disciplines we’re building together as a community… Imagine what can happen and how the world can change as our unified influence becomes magnified through discipline…
