And I remember one time Arnold’s scheduled an appointment with his boss, Doug, because he wanted to find out.
“Doug, tell me. What’s the secret? How do I move up in life?”
So there I was sitting in my cubicle and I remember Arnold getting up from his cubicle which was near mine.
And he walks into the office and he’s back there for like 10 to 15 minutes.
And then he walks out of Doug’s office and he’s walking over to my cubicle and I stand up and he’s just got this bewildered look on his face.
He said something like, “You’re not going to believe what my boss told me.”
And so I was like,
“What happened dude? Tell me. What’s the secret?”
And Arnold basically said that he sat down, and his boss was like, “Alright Arnold, you want to know the secret on how to get ahead in life?
You want to know the secret on how to advance?”
And Arnold was like, “Yeah, tell me the secret.”
So he leans in close and Arnold’s ready for the secret and his boss says,
“Okay, step number 1 is you’ve got to get yourself a set of spandex racing shorts.
Step number 2 is you’ve got to buy a Lance Armstrong book.
And step number 3 is you’ve got to get yourself a racing bike.”
It sounded ridiculous to me.
& at the time, it sounded ridiculous to Arnold.
So his boss said in order advance, you’ve got to get spandex shorts, you’ve got to get a racing bike and you’ve got to get a Lance Armstrong book.
And Arnold’s like, “What are you taking about?”
And Doug says, “Stand up.”
So Arnold stands up and he said, “Do you see that office right over there where the Vice President of Operations?
You see where his office is?”
And Arnold says, “Yeah.” And he goes,
“That guy is interested in Lance Armstrong and racing bikes.
And if you want to move up in this company?
You need to learn about that stuff.”
And when Arnold told me that, I thought that was the most ridiculous thing that I’d ever heard.
There’s no way I’m going to make my living smooching and kissing other people’s behinds.
I was a little frustrated at that time.
Here’s the twist, I read ‘‘How to Win Friends and Influence People’’ for the second time.
And I realized that that was actually pretty good advice from Arnold’s boss.
And the reason why it’s pretty good advice is because of the fact that Dale Carnegie points out on this book,
…that you can be less educated,
……………..you can be less skilled, you can be less a lot of things.
And if you have the ability to get along with people.
And if you have the ability to communicate.
And if you have the ability to win friends and influence people,
…literally you will be advanced past the people who are more skilled, who are more talented, so on and so forth.
And it actually gives several examples in the book of how this happens.
He talks about engineers.
How they did those studies where there’s this groups of engineers.
And the highest paid engineers are not the ones who knew the most about Engineering.
They’re not the ones who were the most skilled.
They were the ones who were the most capable in communicating and getting along with other people.

Things that they are interested in.
And things that they want and desire.

However, in my studies and observations of successful people, I’ve noticed that they use humor to foster rapport and responsiveness and goodwill.
