The other day, I wrote a bit about how each of us has our own map or model of the world.
Worldview and philosophy are 2 other names describing this same phenomenon.
In NLP they say ‘the map is not the territory’, to help make this distinction.
The map is a representation of reality, it’s not the actual road you’re traveling on.
It’s a map, right?
We all have a map in our head of how we think the world is, and then there’s the way the world really is.
So here’s the choice.
Some people say “My map is fine, I don’t need a better one.”
These are the people who refuse to read, listen to audios, learn from others and be open to looking at information that is different from what’s already on their map.
Here’s the danger with that line of thinking.
- What if the map we have in our head is missing a few pieces?
- What if whoever created the map in the first place, made some mistakes?
- What if there are some things on the map that used to be accurate but then maybe, a new road was built that didn’t get updated on the map in our head?
If the maps in our head are limited, so too will our choices be limited, regardless of how unlmited reality or our potential might actually be.
Perhaps this is why, in NLP, they say “Choice is better than no choice.”
And maybe why Jim Rohn said “You don’t have to do all you find out, but you better find out all you can do.”
If you know the choices, you don’t have follow them all, but at least you have the options.
If you don’t know the options than you are enslaved to whats on the map.
Hidden slavery.
For me, the solution is to always be hungry to learn and evaluate new ideas.
I try to be open to knowledge, insight, wisdom, inspiration and truth from wherever it might come, even sometimes from the most unlikeliest of places.
I don’t have to believe everything I hear.
I don’t have to accept averything I learn.
I don’t have to do everything I find out.
But at least I’ll have the choice.
The more roads on your map, the more freedom to choose.
Maybe this is why it’s been said that the Glory of God is intelligence.
And that light is so often compared to truth.
The light of truth shall set you free.
Free from hidden slavery.
