Bad Music

If you want to make good music, you have to be willing to make bad music.

This morning I got a message from someone I love.

He inspires me to never give up and keep moving forward.

He’s also a very talented musician.

He sang me a line from one of his famous songs.

I heard his beautiful voice and was inspired.  I wanted to sing him a line back but then a little voice inside said, ‘Paul, you can’t sing!  You’ll sound awful compared to his seasoned voice.”

I thought about it for a few more minutes and decided to sing him a line back from another one of his songs, and I didn’t care how it sounded because it was going to be coming from my heart.

When I decided to host my first conference call back in 2009, only 2 people showed up.

Me and my friend Kris.

Over the years I kept singing my song and eventually, others started singing too and the music started reaching the hearts and minds of the people our music was supposed to serve.

Over time, that ‘bad music‘ has turned into

  • priceless relationships,
  • profitable business enterprises, and
  • welcome sounds of hope and inspiration that has helped countless souls the world over to flip on the light switch of their hearts and decide to smile and move forward creating something better for themselves and the people they love.

None of that would have happened had I not been willing to make ‘bad music’ in the beginning.

What’s your ‘bad music’?

  • Your first few prospecting conversations?
  • Your first YouTube video?
  • Your first FB live?
  • Your first webinar?
  • Your first book?

Whatever it is, I challenge you to open your mouth and sing it loud and proud because bad music, is how good music is made.

  1. Wow! What a message! Never give up on your dreams and don’t be afraid to share because you never know who’s listening (or reading). You may someday know who benefitted by it, but that doesn’t matter as much. The bottom line is you sing your song out loud and someone will hear the message that is just for them at their appointed time. Thank you, Paul, for sharing!

  3. This is a wonderful post, Paul. I totally agree. You have to be willing to risk using your voice, sharing your message, singing your song. It takes courage to do that sometimes. I believe we often internalize the message that our story isn’t good enough, or interesting. The right words at the right time, can truly open a person’s heart and mind. Thank you for singing! We all need to find the courage to belt out the song of life that we all have inside.

    • Thanks Olivia! You’re so right… we do internalize that message and even after we get past it – every once in a while the message bubbles back up and we have to remember to put it back in it’s place! Easier to do when we have other great voices like you’re singing alongside us. 🙂 Thanks so much for your words and for your encouragement! You are the best! So excited about getting to you more.

      To freedom and beyond!

      Paul

  4. This is a wonderful post, Paul! I totally agree. I believe that the right group, and the right connections, can help each of us find the courage to use our voices, and tell our stories.
We all have a song inside us that needs to be shared. We just need to know, REALLY know, that it’s valuable for others. Thank you for singing!

  5. I absolutely LOVE this post 😍 I’m a closet singer. Even though I’m not that great when it comes to belting it out, and I may not be able to carry a tune if I had a basket, the point? Is to not die with the song inside you. Thank you Paul, for all of your wisdom and awesomeness. And btw, you’re a pretty good singer in my book.
